derby action

it's that time of the year again. Lincoln doesn't have a velodrome but we do have roller derby. i had to go cheer on my friends amy, jane, and christine who were on a new team in the Lincoln league, the hood ratz.

it seems like every joe schmoe wants to build a fixed gear these days. some guy brought this in. he roached his chainring, and the crank too. uh dude, if you're gonna build a fixed gear at home you need to be sure the chainring bolts are tight BEFORE you ride it.

the killer south wind turned what is normally an easy 20 mile stretch into one long interval. when i got to Cortland i stopped for a snack. while i was there this steven seagal wannabe type in a black leather coat came in. he asked the clerk go through her entire stock of copenhagen long cut to find the freshest dated can possible. he even asked her to go in back and check there too. with that mullet i think the guy has bigger problems than finding a fresh can of chew.

the wheels spin for ever... gotta love campy bearings. i'm just about done building this baby up. this old white Gios frame is circa '86... over 20 years old and still has more class than most bikes you see around these days. takes me back to highschool when i first fell in love with italian bikes. i shall call her Giovanna.

we had a good crew for the tues night mwc ride, and what perfect weather. after playing jackrabbit in town for a bit we headed out toward the park under a beautiful sky.

i also earned some more street cred by demonstrating my speedy flat fixing skills.

on our way back we saw a few teams on the course. butchie showed off some of his skills as we passed them.

we arrived just before 1 o'clock. while the racers prepped and checked-in we just hung out. most of the people competing had driven out there, and they were suprised to see 20-25 of us roll up from Lincoln. i think some of them thought we were in the race. Panama is a tiny town with no convenience store, but luckily the local volunteer fire dept had hotdogs, brauts, and redbull for refueling.

sunday ride to Panama

cvo sent the word out, we were going to ride out and support some local peeps competing in the Panama Enduro. the weather was great, and the dirt roads weren't muddy so the going was pretty good. we had a good possy with 20~25 people. we got spread out at times, with some stopping for mechanicals or whatever, but we would regroup along the way. i rode my roger (with a 42x18 gear), and with the headwind it made some of the hills difficult, so it was easier if i revved up the rpms at times.

i guess i should have ridden the snow BUSS to work last night. but no problem, i still run pretty fat tires on the crosscheck (1.85" wtb mutano raptors) so i just let some air out to get them pretty soft (~25 psi) and hit it.
