tooling around

after grabbing a bite to eat downtown i rode around behind the haymarket and checked out the trains. i spotted an odd looking rig across the tracks and went over for a closer look. turns out it's a herzog MPM, or multi-purpose machine. apparently the whole rig can be operated by just one person and can do a all sorts of work, but no humping.

probably right about that. when i saw it i was like 'herzog'??? i had never seen one before. i wonder when UnionP or Burlington Northern stopped doing their own track maintenance?

I love how many interesting things you see riding around town. :)

Both BNSF and UP still do the majority of their own track work. Herzog stepped in and offered up their services and both rail roads accepted. BNSF people use to do everything that Herzog does.
