heading for margaritas
i was running 20min late but still managed to catch the group a ways south on 77. after fighting a brutal headwind like that for 18 miles a few margaritas were in order. the ladies love them, especially miss jen.

frogs and horns
some bikes have horns...
and some have frogs.
you never know what type of creations that people will roll in on for the rat-ride. the owner of re-cycled cycles, scott, brought his antler bike. it was in the zombie art show back in july.
recovery ride
it was a long weekend to say the least and i'm still recovering. no serious rides for me but rather i just took it easy and slept in. lindsey called me late sunday afternoon to go bike shopping, and i'm glad she did otherwise i probably would have stayed in bed all day. we ended up down at re-cycled cycles to see what they had. she was looking for a cross bike that fits her better than her current one, and wouldn't you know it we found a little 2001 lemond poprad at a killer price. she wanted to test it out right away, and with the weekly rat-ride starting a few minutes later, we decided to go along. we headed north to meet up with the group at a bar on cornhusker called the tackroom for some beverages. i didn't drink anything, but it was nice to get out for a casual spin. thanks for waking me up linz!

almost done
after i left jack's, i checked in on the bridge construction. looks like they'll be done with the new overpass soon.
sunday fun on two wheels
most of the bikes on the rat ride are garage sale bargains or dumpster finds that were fixed up by their owners. one guy was definitely getting the most mileage possible out of his rear tire. the tread was shot but the casing was holding. after riding through holmes lake and east on the trail past 84th street we headed downtown for tacos and beverages at jack's.
rat ride
turns out i was just in time for the re-cycled cycles 'rat ride'. it's a casual group of people on mostly cruisers who show up at the shop at 5 every sunday. they ride around a bit before heading somewhere to drink and eat. even local celebs like cara showed up. i decided to tag along for the heck of it.

una copa de francia
i went down to the south mill to get a latte and to chat with my friend joaquìn who was working. turns out he brought me gift from his travels in france this summer. he was near the tourmalet when the tour de france passed by and picked me up a mug. ¡gracias joaquìn!

waxing nostalgic
once in a while seeing an old bike will take me back to my 'youth'. someone brought in an old bike to the shop for a tuneup. it's an old legnano, the legendary brand of emilio bozzi. way back in the golden era of cycling (the 40's and 50's) six world championships were won on legnanos. this one is from the late 60's with nice campy parts of the day. it looks like it's been sitting in a garage for a few decades, so it's great that someone will be riding it again. seeing this old bike reminded me of when i first heard of the brand. it was 1988, i was 19 and racing with the local cornhusker cycling club and i was crazy for italian bikes. i hadn't been able to afford one yet, and reading about maurizio fondriest winning the world championships that year on one (making it seven for legnano) made me want a legnano really bad. like this old one above, maurizio's was metallic olive green with red pin-stripping. there was a huge controversy in that race, with bauer causing criquielion to crash as they sprinted for the line and fondriest most likely won because of it. the video shows a classic move in sprinting... go on the sheltered inside, but it can be risky. a few weeks later when the latest issue of winning magazine came out, i read about that sprint and studied the pictures over and over again. that is when i fell in love with that green color. i also remember reading that bauer needed a police escort to get out of belgium without harm. anyway... see what old italian bikes will do to me? i think i still have my old legnano cap from that year around somewhere, i'm gonna dig it out.

inked
i managed to get down to the wednesday night rendevous point by 6 for once, and headed out with a big group on the team-fire ride. i noticed that jen has a new tatt (it's the names of her two kids combined into one script). it got me thinking about getting something. earlier this summer at a roller derby i won a $50 gift certificate from iron brush. i'm still trying to decide whether or not i'll go under the needle. what would i get? i have no kids (as far as i know) and no pets. nor do i have any shortcomings that i need to compensate for by getting a 'macho' tatt (barbed wire, a scorpion or devil, etc.) in the hope that people will think i'm tuff. but i do have a love of bikes. so yeah, if i did get a tattoo it'd most likely be something bike related, duh. but then the snob has almost scared me away from that idea too.

tooling around
after grabbing a bite to eat downtown i rode around behind the haymarket and checked out the trains. i spotted an odd looking rig across the tracks and went over for a closer look. turns out it's a herzog MPM, or multi-purpose machine. apparently the whole rig can be operated by just one person and can do a all sorts of work, but no humping.
